PUPIL: LEARNING IN MIXED REALITY
FALL 2018, CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY
Pupil is a semester-long student project at the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC), Carnegie Mellon University aiming to create educational prototypes on mixed reality platforms for the future classroom, where AR gears and spatial display are readily available as teaching tools. Through multiple prototypes, our team aims to come up with educational design patterns in AR.
The client who sponsored this project is Mark J. W. Lee, an educational technology and learning sciences researcher and practitioner, currently a visiting scholar at Carnegie Mellon University and an adjunct senior lecturer at Charles Sturt University, Australia.

FOODSCRIPTION
SUMMER 2019, PHRQL, INC
OVERVIEW
FoodScription is an AI-powered meal planning SaaS product that creates personalized recipe recommendations. PHRQL is developing FoodScription products for individuals and nutrition professionals on desktop and mobile platforms using an agile design system.
As the sole designer (team of <10 people), I'm leading the design of FoodScription from inception through execution. I'm working closely with the entire team including the CEO, product manager, developers and external stakeholders to build user-centric and visually delightful meal planning experiences.

Because we're a small team, we chose to use principles and libraries by Google Material Design as a foundation of FoodScription products.
This practice, commonly adopted by small startup teams, ensures realistic workload and timeline for me and the frontend developers
CHALLENGE & APPROACH
Conventional communication between dietitians and their patients costs much and takes long. FoodScription aims to use our AI nutrition analysis backend to build a secure, time-efficient and personalized solution which meets the professional standards of Registered Dietitians and the health and lifestyle needs of their patients.

LEARNINGS
FoodScription is my first commercial projects I lead from inception through execution. I got the change to collaborate with an entire small yet cross-functional team to deeply understand the users, and to deliver user-centric experiences.
As a new product by a startup, FoodScription inevitably faces many challenges. For instance, I wrote a separate blog post about analyzing user feedback efficiently.
However, I appreciate every step in the process. It's deeply rewarding to my design career as I learned a lot within and beyond design (working directly with the CEO and technical Leads is a big bonus for me because I gained so much knowledge on product strategy, working with external stakeholders etc.).
